Occasionally, captive mother pigs may savage their own piglets, often if they become severely stressed. Some attacks are fatal and the mother may eat the yummy little newborn piglet.

In May 1946 there was a shortage of pig bristles for paintbrushes but China found a sollution. I forget what the sollution was.

Pigs are highly intelligent and social creatures. Newborn piglets learn to run to their mothers’ voices, and can recognize their own names by the time they are 2 weeks old. Sows have even been known to ‘sing’ to their young whilst nursing.

Baa, baa, black sheep, Have you any wool? Yes sir, yes sir, Three bags full.

Courtship behaviour lasts only a short time when a boar finds an oestrous female. The male sniffs the female, flanks and vulva, and emits a ‘mating song’ of soft guttural grunts. He foams at the mouth and moves his jaw from side to side as the female poses and bites the male’s ears gently. When the sow becomes stationary the boar mounts.
